Here are links I found interesting on March 17, 2012:

  • The Agony and Ecstasy of Mike Daisey, This American Life and Steve Jobs – Apparently, not everyone was fooled by Mike Daisey's TAL show.
  • Mike Daisey’s ‘Agony and Ecstasy of Steve Jobs’ cancelled after reports of fabrications – Chicago Tribune – The radio program “This American Life” and WBEZ 91.5 FM said Friday that they have cancelled the live presentation of Mike Daisey’s “The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs” at The Chicago Theatre on April 7. The announcement cited "the revelation of numerous fabrications in Daisey’s story," which he has told at both at the Public Theater in New York and on "This American Life."
  • Retraction | This American Life – "We've discovered that one of our most popular episodes contained numerous fabrications. This week, we detail the errors in Mike Daisey's story about visiting Foxconn, which makes iPads and other products for Apple in China. Marketplace's China correspondent Rob Schmitz discovered the fabrications." You really need to listen to this show to hear how an actor is basing a hit show on lies — and trying to pass them off as journalism. This makes me angry.
  • Secretariat Horseradish Cream Sauce – Made this to go with my Corned Beef and Cabbage lunch.
  • Traditional Corned Beef and Cabbage (AKA New England Boiled Dinner) – This is the recipe I followed today. It's simmering now and it sure smells good!
  • “The book reader of the future”, 1935 – Looks a little like the original Kindle. Ah, just kidding.
  • The Right Not to Know – "The painful decision to terminate a pregnancy is now—thanks to Texas' harsh new law—just the beginning of the torment." You think it's right for the government to mandate rape — because that's what it is — before a woman can get a legal abortion? If so, read this and imagine yourself or your child or your best friend in this woman's shoes.
  • The Tea Party has drowned – "The Tea Party is over. In the way of parties that end, there are still people around. Those who remain search for a return of the old energy and make unconvincing demonstrations of people having a good time. But the central focus, the excitement, the purpose of the thing is dissipating. That is because the bad stuff that its members and boosters put out — lies, slanders, paranoia, ignorance — is losing what grip it had over the minds of people with minds." Killed by greed, if you ask me.
  • Radio show on Apple’s Chinese workers is retracted – "The U.S. radio program "This American Life" has retracted an episode critical of working conditions at a Chinese factory that makes iPhones and iPads for Apple Inc, saying it had contained "numerous fabrications."" If a respected news media outlet can be fooled by embellished "journalism," how can WE know the truth?
  • A St. Patrick’s Poem On Shamrocks And Stereotypes – Not every Italian is Tony Soprano, either.
