Please bear with me as I make the move.
It took four separate exports and even more imports to move the data from the old site to this one. The performance is markedly better; I really don’t know what was wrong with the old one. And I’ve got some old features that I’d disabled working again.

I’m currently migrating this blog to a new server at Blue Host. I’ve had enough crap from GoDaddy and am ready for a change.
This blog has over 2,000 entries and nearly 3,000 comments. Because of the sheer volume of content, I have to jump through a few hoops to move it all to the new server. As a result, you’ll see two versions of this blog:
- MariaLanger.com (this site) will include the most recent content.
- AnEclecticMind.com (the new site) will include the older content.
As content is moved from one blog to another, you’ll see fewer and fewer posts here and more and more posts there. Eventually, all the posts will be there and this domain name will permanently point there.
If you get a “Not Found” error here, chances are, you can find the same post there by swapping the domain name in the URL. For example, the post that could be found at http://www.marialanger.com/2007/07/16/bridge-over-deception-pass/ can now be found at http://www.aneclecticmind.com/2007/07/16/bridge-over-deception-pass/.
I think you’ll be pleased with the change. There’s a problem with my WordPress database on this server that I hope to eliminate by moving. That should speed up the operation of the site. I’ll also be deleting very old and stale content, which should further increase performance.
Wish me luck!
Sorry to hear about your recent hosting troubles. If ever you find yourself in a jam though, drop me a line as I can spare some space on my VPS, especially for emergencies.
Sorry Godaddy gave you such a hard time…
@Jonathan Bailey
BlueHost seems pretty good so far — although the interface for working with my content is just as convoluted as GoDaddy’s. I was with GoDaddy for quite a while, but their consistent and complete failure to admit that problems I’m having are due to their servers was more than I could stand. The other day, when my sites suddenly became “read-only,” was the the last straw. I wasted at least four hours of my day troubleshooting and the problem WAS on their end, as I finally got them to admit.
Frankly, I don’t like GoDaddy’s sexist advertising and the CEO’s attitudes toward more than a few things. If the company spent as much on customer service as it does on its “banned” Super Bowl ads, it might be a much better service. Quite a few tech women I know simply avoid them. It’ll be a big hassle to move, but I’ll feel better about it — in so many ways — once I’ve cut ties with them.
Thanks for the offer!
@Maria Langer
Just keep the offer in your back pocket. I intentionally buy more hosting than I need for many reasons so you’re always welcome on board.
I’ve stopped using Godaddy as well. I never hostsed with them (thank heavens) but I did use them as a registrar and have many domains with them now as well. My gripe list about Godaddy would include the following.
1) Constant upselling: Can’t I just get the freaking domain without three billion other offers?
2) Confusing interface: With you on that one as well, even something as simple as editing DNS servers takes an engineering degree.
3) High prices: They were once the low-cost leader but now I can get domains and hosting MUCH cheaper elsewhere. I guess they have to pay for the commercials.
4) Advertising: As a guy I can’t play the “sexist” card but I can definitely say I don’t “get it”. My degree is in advertising and that doesn’t help. At all.
5) Customer Service: With you on this one as well. Crap. Crap. Crap.
They used to have a site copyright registration service that was reasonably priced. They’ve since abandoned it from what I can tell. Pity, I used to send my clients there and not do registrations for them as they could do it cheaper and I freaking hated that part of the job.
I did just buy two SSL certs for my VPS via Godaddy because they ARE cheaper there. But I’m transferring my domains away and not looking back. The less business I give Godaddy the happier I’ll be, I agree with that.
Congrats on getting the move completed Maria.. it does seem noticeably faster on the new server.
I have to say I echo Jonathan’s sentiments about Godaddy – it pretty much sums my experience up with them. I too only use them as a registrar; even then only for .com domains (most of my stuff is .co.uk) and it really is torturous to edit DNS settings. A simple “copy” domain button to make new domains the same as my others would be a good start!
Jonathan: Who do you use now as your registrar, and is there DNS management tool better?
Thanks… Craig.
