Jason: Thanks for taking the time to comment.

Frankly, I think the folks who do best as writers are the ones who write specifically for a client -- no matter what that kind of writing is. One of my first successful writer friends was a copywriter who wrote advertising and marketing copy for businesses and their products. Not very glamorous, but it certainly paid the bills.

Thank you Maria. I very much enjoyed reading your article even though I'm not a writer who fits within your pyramid structure (I'm a web designer and also writes copy for my clients). I think the qualities you identified: hard work, skill, persistence, and knowing what sells within your industry can be applied to anyone who wants to succeed working for themselves.

Best wishes,

Jason, UK

Dmytro: Thanks! You know, when I was creating the graphic for the site, I debated using a model that would have all the circles roughly the same size. I think you could be right -- there could well be more people interested in getting published than actually doing the writing to achieve that!

Lovely post and a very nice way to put it. Personally, I can't imagine anyone wanting to be in the "Earn a Living" tier without any desire to actually write. After all, with online scams and blogs that copy content of off others, there's so much more easier ways for boring people like that to (try to) get money.

I know you've said that the "Get Published" tier is smaller than the "Writing" one, but simply in terms of desire (writing for the sake of writing vs. writing for the sake of getting your awesome work published) it'd be interesting to see which one is bigger. If you take away all those fanfic writers, I think that writing for the sake of getting published might win... :P
