Would love to know the story behind this one.
The closest “city” to Quincy, WA, where I’ve been spending my summer, is Wenatchee. I go there weekly to do my laundry, shop at a clean and modern supermarket (Fred Meyer or Safeway), and pick up odds and ends that I can’t get locally. Like the padded sleeve I needed for my 13″ MacBook Pro. I tried Staples, then headed over to Office Depot, where I found a satisfactory cover for it.
What’s the deal with this?
The facade of Office Depot is modern and rather ugly. While it’s possible that it was built looking like that, I suspect it’s a new face on an older building. The reason can be seen in this video.
There’s no way this was added to the building after the fact — unless it was moved from somewhere else. So what’s the story here? Can someone who lives in Wenatchee tell us? Or are you going to wait until I look it up for myself?
While road art like this might not be politically correct in today’s world, you have to agree that it’s kind of cool. I like it because it reminds me of the old days, when roadside attractions and funky signs helped lure travelers into businesses. This was before the days of the interstate highway, before fast foods, before motel chains.
A simpler time.
I live up here in Brewster, and I googled Skookum apples.
The indian reminded me of the one I had seen on an apple label and don’t ask how I remembered the name Skookum – just a lucky shot. As to why it is on that building, that I don’t know. But they used to be a small apple packer back in the 1930′s -1950′s.
They perhaps rescued the sign or their apple warehouse could have been at that location.

Thanks for this! Do you think the Office Depot building could have been a warehouse years ago?
That made me laugh..I like the roaming eyes.
There used to be a Skookum apple packing shed where the Office Depot is today. The big Indian with the rotating eyes was their mega-mascot and it became a town mascot as well over the years. I know the shed existed into the late 70′s or early 80′s. I believe when the Skookum shed was torn down and replaced w/ the Office Depot a deal must have been made to keep the sign. (Kind of like the Citgo sign in Boston.)
Jodene: Thanks for this info. I knew it had to be something like that. They couldn’t create something like that these days. I really like the old signage. This is a great example. Glad I had a chance to stop by and shoot it with my Flip camera.
