My WebCam is back — at least for a while.
I’ve had a WebCam for many years now, but I’ve never been able to keep it up and running consistently. The most recent WebCam is created with an iSight camera. For some reason, the Firewire connection to my dual G5 caused problems when a second hard drive was also connected to Firewire. I suspect, in fact, that this was part of the cause of my most recent hard disk crash and may have had something to do with my logic board problem last year.
On a whim, I decided to plug in the iSight again today, using the old WebCam settings I’d created in EvoCam, my WebCam software. Instead of plugging it directly into my Mac, I decided to plug it into the Seagate Firewire hard disk I now use to mirror my hard drive. It’s powered with an AC adapter, so it doesn’t suck power from the Firewire port on my computer like my other external hard disks do. And it has two firewire ports in back, so I could plug the iSight into it.
So far, so good. The image (shown here) came up without the split screen image problem I was having. It’s been up for about 60 minutes so far — long enough to let it run overnight and perhaps keep it online for a while. So I added it back to this site’s sidebar, under the heading “The View Out My Window.” It’s set up to only display on the Home page.
I may continue to shut down the computer at night; if so, this image won’t be updated overnight. That’s okay, because it’s dark at night anyway.
Cool. I think your previous webcam is what inspired me to set up mine.
I’m starting to have that split screen problem again. I wonder if it’s the camera. I have a spare iSight; I’ll try setting it up today.
What I find lately is that the more stuff I set up and use on my computers, the more problems I have to troubleshoot and fix. Very frustrating.
